What is a Sound Bath?

Broadly speaking, a sound bath is an experience in which an individual is engulfed in deep sound vibrations. The sounds are believed to promote deep relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity by encouraging a meditative state.

Instruments Used in Sound Baths

We use a variety of instruments and tools at Meditation Bar, and in general, that can be a part of producing a sound bath.

  • Crystal Singing Bowls: Crystal bowls are the most common instrument used in a sound bath. The sound is often characterized by a clear, resonant hum that fills the air with vibrations, creating a soothing and meditative atmosphere.

  • Gongs: The sound of a gong in a sound bath is a deep, resonant crash that gradually builds into a complex, immersive wave of vibrations.

  • Chimes: The sound of a chime can be described as a light, melodic cascade of high-pitched tones that produces a calm resonance. Chimes can have individual differences in pitch and volume based on the materials, collection of notes, and construction of each chime.

  • Metal Bowls: The sound of metal bowls is a rich and vibrant tone with deep vibrations that gradually build into a harmonizing wash of sound.

  • Rainsticks: The sound of a rainstick is a soothing, flowing cascade of soft, rhythmic pattering, reminiscent of a gentle rain shower, that gradually fades into a quiet, peaceful murmur.

  • Wah-wah tubes: The sound of a wah-wah tube is a distinctive, pulsating “wah” that shifts in pitch and tone, creating a deep, vocal-like effect with a dynamic, expressive range.

  • Tuning forks: The sound of a tuning fork is a pure, clear, and sustained tone that vibrates with a precise pitch, creating a sharp, focused resonance that lingers in the air.

Benefits of Sound Baths

Though there hasn’t been enough research into the science behind sound baths, one systematic review demonstrated that listening to and playing singing bowls contributed to possible health benefits. However, more research needs to be conducted to draw evidence-based conclusions about the effectiveness of sound baths.

On an individual level, though, many people report a wide variety of benefits of sound baths:

  • Feeling calmer & relaxed

  • Reduced stress

  • Heightened mental clarity

  • Pain relief

  • Better sleep

  • Improved mood

It is important to note that a sound bath shouldn’t be used as a replacement for any medical treatment, but can be used as a complementary or supplementary treatment.

What to Expect at Meditation Bar

The length of a sound bath can vary, but at Meditation Bar, we provide either 30-minute or 50-minute sound baths, typically on nights or the weekends.

Being comfortable in a sound bath is essential, so we recommend wearing loose-fitting clothing if you run hot, or bringing a jacket if you easily get cold. We will also ask you to remove your shoes, so wear socks if your feet typically get cold.

Our studio has two cushioned massage tables and two anti-gravity chairs to experience sound baths on. We also provide blankets, pillows, and props to maximize your comfort.

Even if it’s called a sound “bath,” you won’t be getting wet. No need for a swimsuit!
